In Sandbox, students work on small, interdisciplinary teams to launch real tech companies while receiving up to 18 credits inside their major (typically Computer Science, Business, and Design majors).

Sandbox was born as an experiment at BYU in 2020. Through collaboration with BYU’s top academic programs and alumni networks, and building on its history of startup success, that experiment became a new model for startup incubation:

sandbox companies are collectively valued at $95M.

Five Sandbox companies have been accepted to Y Combinator, the world’s most prestigious startup accelerator.

sandbox supercharges your major and drives more student demand.

Students understand the value of Sandbox and are drawn to majors that support it. Once established on campus, we've seen Sandbox increase demand for a major by up to 50%.

the sandbox platform is so much more than a class.

global classroom

  • We've reversed the model of remote learning. Rather than students sitting alone in their apartments (or beds!), they come in person to class and the professor is remote. This allows for all the energy of an in person class while being able to bring in experts on any given topic.
  • Our proprietary software is custom designed for this setting, breaking the paradigm of a one-way stream and allowing for highly personal interaction between professor and students.

custom learning management system (LMS)

  • Our custom LMS is so much more than a list of assignments and class sessions. Our LMS is a guide through each milestone in the startup journey—even when students have to pivot and start over.
  • At each stage, students know what KPIs matter and are held accountable to and motivated by the progress of others in the cohort.

one-on-one mentorship

  • The Sandbox app facilitates real mentorship relationships. Students start by browsing our directory of founders, experts and early adopters. They can then instantly book time with the perfect person for their needs. And we don't stop there, following a mentorship session our system collects feedback from the mentor and gives it to the student to speed learning.

recruiting and placement

  • Because employers recognize that Sandbox students are among the best prepared graduates, they've partnered with us to give our students direct access to their jobs. When students apply for a job inside the Sandbox app, their application goes directly to the hiring manager—not into a black hole.

“I've hired hundreds of engineers in my career. Sandbox students are the most prepared new grads by a wide margin. They better understand and appreciate the plight of a startup and as a result we get massive speed in shipping product.”
—Brant Choate, CTO of Remi, YC W22

"When hiring for new roles at Campfire I want to hire from Sandbox. At this point, I don't need to interview Sandbox students. I just know they'll be great. I've hired 7 Sandbox alums so far and will continue to hire talent from Sandbox."
    —Steve Arntz, CEO of Campfire

  • Starting this fall, the sandbox app will include an internal job board where we constantly monitor the job listings of the world's most exciting startups. Most of these jobs don't appear on Handshake.

access to venture funding

  • At the conclusion of Sandbox, students pitch their companies at our global Demo Day. Because our Demo Day includes startups from multiple universities, we attract a broad set of investors.
  • Unlike most startup incubators, Sandbox doesn’t take any equity for participation.

local managing directors

  • Every Sandbox cohort has a local managing director. This director can either be a professor or a volunteer from the community (typically a successful founder). Local directors provide 5-10 hours of weekly in-person support.

our approach allows universities to launch sandbox quickly without revising their curriculum

Our partner universities set up special sections of existing capstone, internship, special topics, and independent study courses. Recruiting for your first Sandbox cohort can launch on your campus in as quickly as two months from our first meeting.
